Letterpress printing is a technique of relief printing. Using a platen printing press, the process allows many copies to be reproduced by repeated direct impression of an inked, raised surface against the sheets of paper.
Our studio has four platten presses and a guillotine. The Chandler & Price press featured above is over 100 years old and is still capable of creating prints with a distinctive artistic craftsmanship incapable of being replicated by modern digital printers.
Color is mixed by hand using a set of primaries (red, yellow, and blue), neons (magenta, red, yellow, orange, green, and blue), metallics (gold and silver), white extender (for translucency), and black.
Letterpress prints are distinguished by their deep embossed impressions on double thick paper. Because letterpress is an antique printmaking medium, it has a classy fine art connotation.
